About Us

At Busy Bee, we work hard toward achieving this goal, creating a play-based learning environment to help children grow. For small children, play is learning, and what may look like simple fun to grown-ups, is exactly what is needed to develop strong minds, bodies, and imagination in young people.

Busy Bee operates as a State-certified family child care. We are proud to meet the State of Oregon’s highest standards & regulations for child care, and are certified as an “Eco-Healthy Child Care” facility through the Oregon Environmental Council as well.

We believe that every child deserves a wondrous & joyful childhood, filled with imaginative play!

Furthermore, Busy Bee Preschool has been designated as an “Oregon Program of Quality” – an exciting new Statewide initiative that recognizes quality in all types of childcare settings.

Our preschool is open to children aged 2-5, and offers a unique learning experience for each and every child.

Staff

As a state-certified family childcare home, we require all staff are certified in infant and child CPR & First Aid, carry food handler’s permits, and have attended child abuse recognition and reporting classes. Education, certification, and training are important things to consider when choosing a childcare provider, and we here at Busy Bee strive to go above and beyond minimum requirements for continuing education.

Michelle Lewis-Barnes / Owner & Director

Michelle Lewis-BarnesTraining and education is important to me, both as a parent and a childcare provider.

I am proud to have met and exceeded the requirements for State-certified providers in Oregon, and continue to seek out new ways to learn and grow as a provider.

Qualifications:

In addition to meeting basic requirements, I hold a Child Development Associate, which required 120 hours of training in all areas of early childhood care and education, in-group observation, oral interview, and written testing. I completed the process to become nationally-accredited by the National Association of Family Child Care (NAFCC) in 2003, and am currently on the Oregon Registry at a step 10.

I currently have over 1000 clock hours of training in areas of nutrition, behavior, discipline & guidance, health & safety, curriculum, infant & toddler-specific training, care for children with special needs, and business management. I am available as a Master Trainer to other providers, and have been a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician and Statewide Mentor – all great opportunities for me to work in the community with other parents and providers – something I thoroughly enjoy!

I was born and raised here in Oregon, and have lived in and around the Portland area my entire adult life. I am married, and have five children, ranging from elementary to middle school ages. My husband and I are busy with the preschool, and in our “spare” time enjoy camping and participating in our children’s extracurricular activities. Busy Bee was begun in 2000, upon the birth of my oldest daughter, and the preschool quickly became a sought-after career choice, as I became ever more interested in how children learn and grow. I believe whole-heartedly in outdoor play, beautiful learning environments, and creating authentic experiences for young children.

Savannah / Assistant

SavannahI live here in Southeast Portland with my husband Michael, a high school teacher, and a small farm’s worth of animals; including a beagle, a few cats, a rabbit, and a mess of chickens. In my spare time I cook, garden, sew, and read preschool teaching blogs and Young Adult dystopia novels.

I grew up in a small town here in Oregon and graduated from Reed College with a degree in English, before realizing that I really wanted to work with young children. My favorite book in middle school was Baby Island by Carol Ryrie Brink, in which two girls get happily stranded on a desert island with four toddlers, so I guess I probably should have known all along that this is what I wanted to do!
